What are Hayfever Tablets?

Hayfever tablets generally contain antihistamines which are medicines often used to relieve symptoms of allergies, such as hayfever, hives, conjunctivitis and allergic reactions to insect bites or stings. There are many types of antihistamine; drowsy and non-drowsy antihistamines.

  • Antihistamine hayfever tablets that can make you feel drowsy include chlorphenamine (Piriton), cinnarizine, diphenhydramine, hydroxyzine and promethazine.

Can You Take Hayfever Tablets When Pregnant?

Most people can safely take hayfever tablets, but make sure to speak to your GP or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The NHS advice on taking hayfever medicine when pregnant is that loratadine is usually recommended during pregnancy, and loratadine or cetirizine are usually okay to take while breastfeeding.

Can You Take More than One Hayfever Tablet a Day?

No, usually not.  Most over-the-counter antihistamines should be limited to one tablet per 24-hour period. Always check the packaging and accompanying instructions on dosage and how to take medication, to avoid harmful side effects.

What is the Strongest Hayfever Tablet?

Some of the strongest over-the-counter antihistamines include cetirizine, loratadine and fexofenadine. Allevia and Treathay hayfever tablets are prescription-strength hayfever tablets. Hayfever symptoms shouldn't impede your day-to-day activities; both Allevia and Treathay tablets help reduce the main seven hayfever symptoms within one hour.

Allevia and Treathay are prescription-strength remedies that have more recently been made available at pharmacies, providing immediate and up to 24 hours of relief from uncomfortable hayfever symptoms. Allevia tablets are also free from lactose and gluten and are suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over.

Are hayfever tablets safe in pregnancy?

Certain allergy treatments should not be taken without a prescription while pregnant, including some antihistamines. You may be encouraged to try an alternate form of hayfever remedy instead, such as a nasal spray or eyerdrops.

If you do require allergy tablets, Loratadine and Cetirizine are generally prescribed as these do not cause drowsiness.
