The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus also known as MCV is a skin infection that affects the upper layers of the skin. It is most common in children aged between 1 and 10 years old and is caused by coming into contact with an infected person or object. The lumps are similar in appearance to warts. The virus is extremely contagious and in order to prevent the bumps from spreading, you should avoid scratching them and avoid sharing personal items with others.
The treatment of Molluscum Contagiosum Virus is optional, as left unattended, the legions will disappear on their own provided you have a strong immune system, but this could take anywhere from six months to a year. However, if you have concerns about spreading the virus or the legions are located on the face, you may wish to explore treatment options. You can receive at home treatments including over the counter products or you can seek treatment from your GP. The right solution for you will depend on your personal circumstances such as where the bumps are located and the strength of your immune system.
There are a number of affordable over the counter treatments that you can use at home. These include MolluTinc and Molludab solution. While MCV isn’t painful, it can cause an itching sensation and the skin can become irritated. Molludab solution contains the key ingredient potassium hydroxide and is designed to break down the skin cells surrounding the virus and encourages the immune system to take action. MolluTinc is an effective MCV treatment that contains 10% potassium hydroxide and can be applied to the raised bumps twice daily. This treatment should be applied by adults only.
Some treatments for the Molluscum Contagiosum Virus can be performed by a doctor and include Cryotherapy, Laser Therapy, Topical therapy and Curettage. These treatments involve freezing the bumps or using a laser or small tool to destroy each bump or legion. Unlike at home treatments, these techniques can result in pain and potential scarring and many involve multiple treatments.
