What causes a cough?
A cough may be a symptom of various illnesses or infections. Some of the more common causes of a cough include:
- Cold & flu
- Allergies, such as hayfever
- Asthma
- Smoking
- Laryngitis
- Infections, such as bronchitis or coronavirus
How can you get rid of a cough?
Coughs can be treated at home. There’s normally no need to make an appointment with your GP. If your cough is accompanied by other symptoms such as a high fever or feeling unwell, you should stay home until your symptoms have cleared. If you are worried about your cough, then you should visit your GP.
Usually your cough will go away on its own, but there are some steps you can take to help:
- Get plenty of rest
- Drink more water and fluids
- Avoid going out in cold, dry weather
- Take a cough medicine to reduce feelings of ‘itchiness’, such as syrups, lozenges
Some people also find that drinking hot lemon and honey also helps.
