Description

Beconase Allergy Nasal Spray is used to prevent and treat allergic rhinitis and perennial rhinitis in adults aged 18 years and over. When you have rhinitis, the inside of your nose becomes swollen and itchy. This often occurs during the early summer when it is caused by breathing in pollens from grasses or trees and is called hayfever. Some people get problems all the year round and this is called perennial rhinitis. It may be due to house dust mites or animals such as cats or dogs.

When you spray Beconase Aqueous Nasal Spray into your nose, it helps to relieve the itching, sneezing and blocked or runny nose.

FAQ

What is Beconase Hayfever Relief Nasal Spray?

Beconase is a corticosteroid nasal spray that contains beclometasone dipropionate (50 micrograms per spray). It is used to prevent and treat symptoms of hay fever and airborne allergies, such as sneezing, blocked nose, itchy nose, and runny nose. Beconase is available over the counter in the UK without a prescription.

How does Beconase nasal spray work?

Beconase works by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages caused by allergic reactions. The active ingredient, beclometasone, is a type of steroid that helps to soothe irritated tissues in the nose, helping to relieve allergy symptoms and reduce swelling and mucus production.

Is Beconase effective for hay fever and other allergies?

Yes. Beconase is clinically proven and recommended in UK guidelines (including NHS advice) for the treatment of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis) and perennial allergic rhinitis caused by allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander.

How should I use Beconase nasal spray?

For adults aged 18 and over, the recommended dose is two sprays into each nostril twice daily (morning and evening). Once symptoms are under control, this may be reduced to one spray per nostril twice a day. Always follow the instructions in the leaflet and do not exceed 8 sprays per day.

How long does Beconase take to work?

Beconase doesn’t provide immediate relief — it can take up to 3 days to feel the full effect. For best results, start using it a few days before your allergy symptoms typically begin, especially during hay fever season.

Can I use Beconase alongside antihistamines?

Yes. Beconase can be used in combination with oral antihistamines (like cetirizine or loratadine) if symptoms are severe or not fully controlled by one product. Speak to a pharmacist before combining allergy treatments to make sure it’s safe and effective for your needs.

Are there any side effects with Beconase nasal spray?

Common side effects may include a dry nose, throat irritation, or minor nosebleeds. These are usually mild and temporary. Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions or persistent irritation. Always read the patient information leaflet and stop use if you experience concerning symptoms.

Can Beconase be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, speak to your GP or pharmacist before using Beconase. According to UK guidelines, beclometasone nasal sprays may be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh any risks, but always under medical advice.

Is Beconase the same as prescription beclometasone spray?

Yes. Beconase contains the same active ingredient as prescription beclometasone nasal sprays but is sold in a lower dose suitable for over-the-counter use. It is considered just as effective for managing hay fever symptoms when used correctly.
