FAQ

What is Piriton Children's Allergy Syrup used for?

Piriton Children’s Allergy Syrup is used to relieve allergy symptoms in children, including hay fever, skin rashes, food allergies, insect bites, pet allergies, and dust mite reactions. It’s also effective for conditions like chickenpox-related itching.

How does Piriton Allergy Syrup work?

This syrup contains chlorphenamine maleate, a sedating antihistamine that works by blocking histamine, the chemical your child’s body releases during an allergic reaction. This helps reduce itching, swelling, sneezing, and irritation.

Is Piriton suitable for young children?

Yes, Piriton Syrup is suitable for children aged 1 year and over. Always follow the age-specific dosage instructions on the packaging or speak to one of our pharmacists if you're unsure.

How quickly does Piriton Syrup start working?

Piriton usually starts to relieve symptoms within 30 minutes, with effects typically lasting 4 to 6 hours. It can be especially helpful at bedtime if itching or allergies are disrupting sleep.

Can Piriton Syrup cause drowsiness?

Yes, Piriton can cause drowsiness in some children. In some cases, this can be helpful if allergies are keeping your child awake, but it’s best to monitor how they respond and avoid giving it before activities that require alertness.

How much Piriton Syrup should I give my child?

Dosage depends on your child’s age:

  • 1–2 years: 2.5ml twice daily
  • 2–6 years: 2.5ml every 4–6 hours (max 6 doses in 24 hours)
  • 6–12 years: 5ml every 4–6 hours (max 6 doses in 24 hours)

Never exceed the stated dose, and use the provided measuring spoon or syringe.

Can I give Piriton Syrup with other allergy medicines?

It’s best to avoid combining antihistamines, including over-the-counter allergy meds, unless directed by a doctor or pharmacist. If your child is already taking any medication, speak to us before using Piriton.

Does Piriton Syrup contain sugar or colouring?

Piriton Children’s Syrup contains sucrose and ethanol. If your child has a medical condition such as diabetes or is on a restricted diet, check with your doctor or pharmacist before use.

Can I use Piriton for chickenpox itching?

Yes, Piriton is often recommended to help soothe itching caused by chickenpox. It helps calm the skin and may improve sleep during recovery. Always consult a pharmacist to ensure it’s appropriate for your child’s symptoms.
